GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization, also called AI search optimization. It covers the actions that increase the probability that a company, a product or a piece of content is picked up and cited in the answers of AI assistants: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews.
The term comes from a research paper published in late 2023 by researchers from Princeton and several universities, who measured the effect of content changes on visibility in generated answers. Since then, the practice has taken shape along with usage: a growing share of professional searches starts with a question asked to an AI rather than a Google query.

GEO: a short definition
GEO consists of making a website and a brand easy to find, understand and cite for a language model that answers a question. Where SEO seeks a position in a list of results, GEO seeks a place in a written answer: a mention, a citation with a link, or being the company recommended when a prospect asks “which agency for this need?”.
It rests on three things: pages that answer real questions directly and precisely, a clear company identity that is consistent everywhere on the web, and third-party sources that confirm what the site claims.
How an answer engine works
When you ask a business question to ChatGPT with search enabled, to Perplexity or to Google in AI mode, the system does not rely on its training memory alone. It rephrases your question into several queries, queries a web index, reads a small number of pages, extracts the useful passages, then writes an answer citing some of those pages.
Two practical consequences. First, passages are selected, not whole pages: a paragraph that answers a question on its own has a better chance of being picked up than a brilliant but diffuse page. Second, the system compares what your site says with what other sources say; a claim no third party repeats carries little weight.
What gets a page cited
- A direct answer, placed at the top of the section, phrased like the reader's question.
- Dated, quantified, attributable facts: who, what, how much, since when.
- A clear entity: the company name, what it does, for whom, where, written the same way on the site, on LinkedIn, in directories and in the press.
- Structured data (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article) that describes the page to the machine.
- Third-party sources that repeat the same facts: press articles, specialized directories, partner pages, reviews.
- Open access for answer engine robots in the robots.txt file, and a fast site whose essential content is readable without JavaScript.
GEO in practice: six steps
Here is the order in which we proceed with our clients. It starts with a measurement, because you cannot improve a visibility you do not know.
- Build the set of questions your prospects actually ask an AI (20 to 50 phrasings, by need family).
- Measure the situation: who is cited, on which questions, with which sources, on each engine.
- Fix the foundation: robots.txt, structured data, llms.txt file, service pages and case studies that answer the identified questions.
- Produce the missing content, one question per section, with verifiable facts.
- Obtain corroboration: presence in the sector's directories and comparisons, third-party articles, partner profiles.
- Track share of voice every month and adjust.
GEO and scientific sectors
AI assistants are more cautious on health, biology and technical subjects: they favor sources that explain without exaggerating, cite publications and respect the regulatory framework. This is an advantage for scientific companies that communicate rigorously, and a handicap for those that overpromise. Well-done science communication is, from this point of view, GEO work.
